A lovely summer outing to one of Kitsap’s gems…we’ll begin at the steepled church built by Pope and Talbot in 1870. Pete Orbea, Townsite Manager, will tell us about Port Gamble’s early days. Even for those who know something of this history, it’s fun to hear how two entrepreneurial men from Maine brought a touch of New England to our peninsula when they started a mill that eventually became the longest running mill is North America. We’ll then stroll down Rainier Avenue, stopping at and possibly going into some of the historic houses. We’ll cross the street to look out at the former site of the lumber mill and yard as Pete brings us up to the present day, describing the remediation that is transforming the area into the pristine bay it once was. We’ll have a meal at the Scratch Kitchen restaurant next to the Port Gamble store.
