Experience Kitsap met with local print-maker, Jacquelyn Speare, at her studio in Manette. Jacquelyn was raised in a military family with both of her parents serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. After she attended Eastern Washington University, she and her husband lived in Virginia where she taught high school visual art for four years. In 2012, they moved to Manette and she immediately became engaged in the community through civic volunteerism and her support of the arts.
First, let’s talk about this studio which is a transformed dip down' garage in a 1940's Manette house where you and your family live. What brainstorming occurred to transform this space into a studio?
"Our family was growing and so I always had kids around. About 4 years ago, I needed to turn our one car garage into an art studio because it wasn't being used and I needed the space. I added a wall with color and more lights to make it a brightly lit space. Studios can look so many different ways. If we can turn what we have into something unique or special...because you don't always have the money to rent a studio or buy a place, then that's the best way to go!"
What were the practical things you did, and circumstances you took into consideration to achieve your space, and how does it work with being a full-time parent?
“I worked on turning this into a space where I could both invite people and use for print making. The atmosphere was achieved by collecting old furniture from the local vintage flea market; these pieces accommodate the printmaking equipment, which actually fits into a compact area. Working out of a garage that is mostly underground, everything down here is on wheels because this old house sometimes has a wet basement. Working with 100% cotton paper you have to consider the potential water as well as humidity. My kids really enjoy coming and being my helpers and running prints through the press and using the paper cutter."
What attracted you to printmaking?
"I really enjoy drawing with lots of detailed patterns, but if you spend a lot of time you can only sell one piece. Printmaking creates art that’s more widely accessible. I carve something with which I can make up to 40 prints, and that produces affordable art! You start with an idea, move to the sketching stage, and then carve it onto linoleum tiles. The picture is inked onto the cotton paper with a flatbed press which gives an impression that it is embossed."
In addition to producing prints on various sizes on paper, what else do you print?
"If it's a really successful design then I'll make a sticker out of it, or something else for those who don't have extra room on their walls for art or who might not want to commit to purchasing a full art piece. It's also fun to make a tote bag or a tea towel - finding ways to infuse art into everyday life. I focus on the fine art aspect, but sometimes try to introduce the art in accessible ways for people so it's not such an investment."
You collaborated with other print-makers creating a show at the Bloedel Reserve spring of 2019. Tell us about that.
"That was a very fun show. At the Wayzgoose Kitsap arts festival in Bremerton, Labor Day weekend, 2018, there were a dozen print makers that decided to form a group - WestSound Printmakers. I had a connection with a print-maker who had done some work at the Bloedel Reserve, and asked if we could hold a show there. In spring 2019, all of us invited our friends and our art collectors, and over 500 people RSVP'd for the WestSound Printmakers Show at the Bloedel! That was a beautiful coming together, and they were wonderful hosts. WestSound Printmakers does other shows, too, but COVID has put a little wrench in our plans!”
We mentioned, going in, that you volunteer with groups focused on the local art scene. Give us a shout out on some of that.
“I was involved with the Bremerton Arts Commission at a time it focused on setting the stage for transforming the concrete bulkhead along Washington Avenue and 11th Street into a City-endorsed, outdoor art gallery, the artful utility box wraps, and helping identify the needs with regard to Bremerton's First Friday. These issues involved collaboration with our Public Works Department and with local businesses.”
"Bremerton’s First Friday was primarily supported by the tireless efforts of local artists and businesses, and had been for a long time. I teamed up with Sam Enlow, designer at Fingers Duke, to unite the businesses and galleries under the site BremertonFirstFriday.org. This collaboration and work helped bring a unifying image to the downtown Bremerton arts scene.”

El ambiente se logró recolectando muebles viejos del mercadillo antiguo local; estas piezas albergan el equipo de grabado, que en realidad encaja en un área compacta. Trabajando en un garaje que es mayormente subterráneo, todo aquí abajo está sobre ruedas porque esta vieja casa a veces tiene un sótano húmedo. Al trabajar con papel 100% algodón, debe tener en cuenta el agua potencial y la humedad. A mis hijos les gusta mucho venir y ser mis ayudantes, pasar las impresiones por la prensa y usar el cortador de papel."
¿Qué te atrajo del grabado?
"Realmente disfruto dibujar con muchos patrones detallados, pero si pasas mucho tiempo solo puedes vender una pieza. El grabado crea arte que es más accesible.
